“Planting today then 30 to 40 years later it will has economic value,” said Benediktus.
Regarding sandalwood cultivation system, he explained that the Forest Service program is to support every family to plant sandalwood in their homestead.
According to Benedict, the best strategy to cultivate sandalwood is by supporting every family to cultivate it, since it might become the investment for future and if they succeed growing a dozen of them, then it will be able to overcome poverty problem.
Nowadays, sandalwood grows in some regencies such in Alor regency, East Flores regency, East Sumba regency, TTS regency, TTU regency, Kupang city and also in Kupang regency. (*Ega)

Cendana Tanaman Investasi
Zonalinenews-Kupang- Kepala Dinas Kehutanan Ir. Benediktus Polo Maing kepada wartawan di ruang kerjanya, Jumat (28/12/2013) pukul10.00 wita, menjelaskan bahwa cendana merupakan tanaman visioner karena tergolong tanaman raksasa. “Tanam hari ini maka 30 sampai 40 tahun baru memiliki nilai ekonomi,” ungkapnya.
Mengenai sistem budidaya cendana, Ia menerangkan bahwa program Dinas Kehutanan saat ini cenderung kepada rumah tangga.
Menurut Benediktus, strategi yang tepat untuk membudidayakan tanaman langkah ini melalui rumah tangga sehingga mampu menjadi investasi untuk tahun – tahun kedepan, dan apabila tiap rumah tangga berhasil membudidayakan belasan pohon saja maka ini mampu mengatasi problem kemiskinan.
Saat ini cendana terdapat di beberapa kabupaten seperti kabupaten Alor, Flores Timur, Sumba Timur, TTS, TTU, Kota Kupang dan Kabupaten Kupang. (*Ega)
